Farewell to Qwerty
|
| |
Melbourne, Australia (Age): What will disappear next is the activity I'm engaged in now. Typing is about to vanish, in the manner of morse-code and the semaphore system. In years to come, what will look ridiculous in sci-fi movies is the scene where the hero, needing the help of a computer, crouches over a keyboard and types rapidly. For many, that will seem paradoxical. Millions of people who would have otherwise been working in factories, shops or with pen and paper have been swept into the embrace of Qwerty - the keyboard designed 150 years ago for machines with keys that were liable to stick if any other combination of letters were used.
