Captioned phone call service

Idaho, USA (Statesman): Idahoans who are hearing- or speech-impaired can take advantage of a new technology that allows them to view word-for-word captions of their telephone conversations. The CapTel Service started in Idaho on Thursday. It allows a phone user to read the other party's conversation on the phone's built-in screen while still hearing the person's voice on the other line. The operator "revoices" everything he or she hears into voice-recognition technology that converts speech into text. Captions appear nearly simultaneously with the spoken word.
