Soundex

Sydney, Australia (Sydney Morning Herald): First tested in 1918, Soundex is the de facto standard for name searches. Dr Jack Hermansen, a computational linguist who developed the technology used by Customs, says Soundex is "simple, neat and wrong". He discovered that names are incredibly complex search tools, differing widely in configuration according to culture.
The software is attracting interest from companies such as Citicorp and Dun & Bradstreet, which want to assess credit risk, investigate money laundering, assist in background checks and build databases of marketing lists.
