Device to reverse degeneration of hearing cells

Melbourne, Australia (ABC Science Online)): Scientists working on a cochlear implant have developed a device that can actually help “reverse the death and degeneration of hearing cells that occurs after prolonged deafness.” A small electric current releases specialized molecules that stimulate the nerve regrowth.
The technology, which also has potential for healing spinal cord injuries, is being developed at the Australian Centre for Medical Bionics and Hearing Science, part of Melbourne's Bionic Ear Institute.
