English Only

Pennsylvania, USA (DU): In reaction to the Spanish release of the national anthem, aggravated by the tense political climate of the time, President Bush said to reporters, “I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English.” These comments brought the issue of making English the official language of the United States to the forefront. As a national issue, “Official English” is on the backburner. But it is a little known fact that 28 states in the union have adopted English as the official language, Iowa most recently in 2002.
