Editor's defence rests on translation

Sana'a, Yemen (Yeme Observer): Mohammed al-Asadi, the Editor-in-Chief of the Yemen Observer is being tried for reprinting the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed. The prosecution objected to a request by the defence to provide an Arabic translation of the article in English, that condemned the accompanying crossed-out and obscured images of the cartoons. The prosecutor argued that the accusation rested only on the issue of alleged publication of the insulting Danish cartoons, and that the accompanying articles were therefore not part of the case. However, Judge Sahal Hamzah ordered an accredited translator approved by the court to translate the articles and reports in the English-language newspaper.
