Wisconsin, USA (LaCrosse Tribune): Indian boarding schools took countless Native American children from their mothers, fathers and communities for years at a time. They were not allowed to use their native language; engage in any Indian ways; and learn about their history, culture, religion, heritage or ancestry. Many heartbroken Indian children died in these schools.
The motto of the Carlisle Indian boarding school in Pennsylvania was “Kill the Indian and save the man.”
