Immigrant mother looses child until she learns English

California, USA (Blogging Baby): Can a judge demand that a mother living in the United States speak English? That was the question raised by the unique case of Felipa Berrera, a Mexican immigrant who has temporarily lost custody of her daughter, Linda Cano. At one point during the proceedings, the presiding judge claimed Berrera would not get custody back unless she learned the lingua franca of her host country in six months.
