Calgary, Canada (CBC): Ottawa is offering survivors of residential school abuse up to $30,000 each in a $1.9-billion compensation package released Wednesday morning. As many as 86,000 aboriginal Canadians who attended church-run schools across the country may be eligible for payments under the plan. Tens of thousands of aboriginals were taken from their families and deprived of their culture, and many were sexually or physically abused by school staff. The average survivor is older than 60.
