Freelancers obtain $18 million in class-action settlement

New York, USA (Jossip): A consortium of publishers including the New York Times, Dow Jones and Lexis-Nexis will be paying up to $18 million to freelancers as part of a class-action settlement.
It all started more than a decade ago, when freelancers grew angry over publishers reusing their work in online archives and collecting a profit. The Supreme Court agreed with the writers, declaring archiving amounted to reprinting and thus should benefit the original creator, who held the copyright before the articles went into the databases.
