ASL to become a foreign language in Alabama

Alabama, USA (Tuscaloosa News): Deaf students in Alabama often have been unable to receive advanced academic diplomas because of the requirement that they learn a traditional, spoken foreign language, like French or Spanish - a major obstacle since American Sign Language does not translate into foreign languages (Editor’s note: why not?). But that may change under a bill passed by the Legislature Tuesday.
