Afrikaans and Apartheid

Johannesburg, South Africa (Sunday Times): The ruling African National Congress has been accused by the official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon of doing an about-turn on the issue of mother-tongue education for Afrikaans speakers.
He was referring to the case in which a Cape High Court judge upheld a bid by the governing body of Cape Town's Mikro Primary School to preserve its Afrikaans-only status - after the Western Cape education department ordered the school to create a special English-medium Grade One class this year which, it was argued, could not be accommodated elsewhere in the Kuils River area.
