Critics have claimed the tribe can not prove an unbroken lineage in the U.S. But the Abenaki contend they have been here for generations. Many Abenaki have urged legislators to enact a resolution recognizing them as a tribe. Supporters say since it is a resolution and not a law, the recognition would not lead to land claim fights or casinos.
