Abenakis fight for recognition
|
| |
Vermont, USA (WCAX): The Abenaki nation is not recognized by the state or federal government. Critics have claimed the tribe can not prove an unbroken lineage in the U.S. But the Abenaki contend they have been here for generations. Many Abenaki have urged legislators to enact a resolution recognizing them as a tribe. Supporters say since it is a resolution and not a law, the recognition would not lead to land claim fights or casinos. Instead they would be able to market their products as Abenaki and also have their children be able to apply for Native American Scholarships.
