Voting law will affect languages

New Jersey, USA (Philippine News Online): A 40-year old voting law passed in the heyday of the civil rights movement is set to expire in 2007, and unless reauthorized could affect the way minorities, including Filipinos, elect their officials.
Key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) are set to expire, and one of them is the voting assistance provision, which provides language assistance to voters in immigrant-rich districts. Section 203 identifies the states of Alaska, California, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, Texas, and Washington, as among those jurisdictions where immigrant communities will be given language assistance.
