Bill to fund court interpreters in rural areas
|

Texas, USA (San Antonio Express): The wheels of justice turn slowly — sometimes because a witness or a defendant does not understand English and needs an interpreter who is not always immediately available, members of the Texas House were told Wednesday. But interpreters for a court proceeding would be available by telephone on a 24-hour basis under a bill approved by the House.
Rep. Jerry Madden, R-Richardson, the bill's author, said it's intended to relieve problems in smaller, rural counties where trials can be postponed because qualified interpreters are hard to come by.
