Cyrillic to Latin change non-constitutional

Moscow, Russia: The Constitutional Court on Tuesday ruled that Tatarstan cannot switch the Tatar language's alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin, saying regional authorities have no jurisdiction over the alphabets of ethnic groups and peoples.
Tatarstan had challenged a 2002 federal law requiring that Cyrillic be applied to all alphabets used by people living in Russia. The mainly Muslim republic's parliament and Supreme Court argued that the law contradicts the Constitution, which delegates issues of language and culture to the jurisdiction of ethnic self-governance bodies.
The lawsuit, filed in October, said Latin was more suitable than Cyrillic for transliterating the language's sounds.
