Court interpreters

Pennsylvania, USA: According to a report published on Sunday on mcall.com "the shortage of court interpreters in Pennsylvania and the lack of standards for them is becoming critical, resulting in postponed proceedings and delayed justice, according to advocates. Unqualified interpreters, they add, opens defendants to serious injustices, such as pleading guilty to charges they do not understand."
"Pennsylvania is among a dwindling number of US states that have no certification process or testing mechanism for interpreters, who are responsible for making sure defendants and litigants understand what is happening to them in court. The state also does not require that the interpreters hired by county court administrators from outside agencies have certification or training in courtroom procedures, ethical conduct or legal terminology."
