Minneapolis, USA: After incorrect medication was given to a patient due to a lack of a sign-language interpreter, and the subsequent death of the patient, Fairview Health Services has agreed to pay $208,000 in federal and state penalties and in compensation to the family of the bereaved and three other deaf people.
Fairview also agreed to ensure that qualified sign-language interpreters are available at five of its hospitals. A judge will monitor its compliance for three years.
