On the legal liability of interpreters

Vermont, USA: Further to the resignation by Fred Burkes, chief interpreter for the White House in relations with Indonesian countries, over his refusal to sign a confidentiality clause [see our article dated 22.12.2004], a growing number of court interpreters are concerned about being obliged to testify in court on the content of their translations.
In Vermont, for example, at present foreign-language interpreters are not protected from being called as witnesses in cases in which they were first asked to translate words from one language to another.
