New York, USA: According to a report in today’s New York Times, whatever the outcome of the forthcoming elections in Iraq, they will have an effect on neighbouring countries. “Although Syria's Constitution grants equal opportunity to all ethnic and religious groups in this very diverse country, minority activists say their rights are far from equal. They may not form legal political parties or publish newspapers in minority languages. More than 150,000 members of Syria's largest minority, the Kurds, are denied citizenship.”
