Edinburgh, UK (The Scotsman): The British Education Secretary Charles Clarke moved today to stop universities from removing subjects such as Arabic studies from their syllabus. Mr Clarke said language studies were of “national importance” and needed protection for reasons of “strategic security and inter-cultural awareness”.
Studies in Arabic, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, Mandarin and other far eastern languages and area studies were also to be maintained for business and trade purposes.
