Georgia, USA (Online Athens): University of Georgia English professor William Kretzschmar is director of the Linguistic Atlas Project, which is really a series of studies dating back to the 1930s on how Americans use everyday language. Kretzschmar believes the recordings may be useful in the future development of speech recognition and speech synthesis software. And future researchers may ask questions we can't even think of now, so it's important to preserve as much of the voices as possible.
