California, USA (San Diego Union Tribune): Music can have a distinctly national character, leading some to claim that the language musicians speak influences the melodies they write. Aniruddh Patel of the Neurosciences Institute in La Jolla studies the connections between music and language. He says that people internalize acoustic patterns of speech and express them in the pitches and rhythms of their music. Patel seeks to understand how the brain sorts out these two uniquely human traits: language and music.
