California, USA (LiveScience): Language is so intimately linked with our thoughts that it is hard to imagine thinking without it, but how language influences thought remains a lively topic of discussion, hence the interest of this article, which asks whether geometry constitutes a core set of intuitions present in all humans, regardless of their language or schooling? Although indigenous tribes in the Amazon had never seen a protractor, compass, or even a ruler, a new study found they understood parallelism and right angles and can use distance, angles, and other relationships in maps to locate hidden objects.
