Language learning begins at conception
|
| |
Pennsylvania, USA (Morning Call): Development of oral language comprehension and expression presages the development of written language comprehension (reading) and expression (writing). From birth, children serve a language apprenticeship with their adults and older siblings, so we must learn to enhance their language development. This includes having longer and richer conversations with children and exposing them to the enjoyment of language. Too many adults address children only when they have misbehaved, when language imparts messages of anger, pain and distress. Talking with children when we can achieve loving, affectionate communication is our most effective conversational tool.
