New approach to speech recognition
|

Moscow, Russia: A new computer system has been developed by researchers in Russia that can “understand speech like a human” gathering a word's meaning regardless of how it's spoken, using an approach that is fundamentally different from other speech recogniition sytsems.
Human beings can understand words with various tones, volumes and intonations, separating the meaning of the words from their vocal variations, but speech recognition systems usually need to be trained, producing libraries of possible pronunciation options that a computer can use for comparison.
Researcher Vyacheslav Anciperov and colleagues say they have produced a prototype software interface that works differently, singling out essential elements of speech using a hierarchical structure.
