London, UK (Financial Times): Researchers at Imperial College London and Manchester University have made nerve cells sensitive to light by adding a single gene. Their discovery could help bionic engineers develop a new type of artificial eye to restore sight to the blind.
Other researchers have developed an ultra-low power cochlear implant [to restore hearing], which is undergoing clinical trials in Canada, and hope to use similar technology in a prosthesis for the blind.
