Virginia, USA (News 14): Scientists at the University of Virginia Health System have discovered a new protein, that could one day show how to restore genetic hearing loss without the use of devices such as cochlear implants.
The protein, called TRPA1, is the essential link that allows the sensory cell in the ear to convert a mechanical stimulus such as a sound or a head movement for the sense of balance into an electrical response that can be transmitted to the brain that can perceive sound.
The discovery is reported in the first December issue of “Nature.”
