New York, USA (Reuters Health): Patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS) - that is, those with severe brain damage who demonstrate intermittent awareness of their environment - may retain some degree of cognitive function "despite their inability to follow simple instructions or communicate reliably," investigators report. The results of a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study published in the February 8th issue of “Neurology” indicate that such patients exhibit brain responses to speech similar to those seen in healthy individuals.
