California, USA (San Jose Mercury News (subscription): A legal battle has erupted at the San Mateo home of Koko, the sign-language talking ape, where two former employees of the gorilla's caretaker are suing the foundation for sexual discrimination, wrongful termination, and negligent infliction of emotional distress, among other allegations.
Koko, who is 33, made headlines several years ago after learning more than 1,000 words in American Sign Language from Patterson. In 1998, the female gorilla used her abilities to conduct an Internet chat with fans over America Online.
