AAFP focuses on congenital hearing loss

Medscape, USA (subscription): According to reports at this year's scientific assembly of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), 50% of prelingual hearing loss is genetic, although "77 different genes can cause nonsyndromic hearing loss." One half of cases of congenital hearing loss with a genetic connection are due to an abnormality of connexin 26, an autosomal recessive gene. Although current early detection of hearing loss allows for better outcomes with interventions such as speech therapy, future testing for genetic abnormalities may guide treatment to the source of the problem.”
