Maryland, USA (University of Maryland Diamondback): The National Association on Deafness and other Communication Disorders states there are “critical periods” in the development of infants’ language perception, starting with the first few days after birth.” Researchers at the University of Maryland looked at 100 infants over the past year; their findings have been published in the March edition of Developmental Psychology.
The researchers discovered infants paid more attention to their name when the target voice was 10 decibels louder than the background. When the target voice was only five decibels louder than the background, the infants gave each name equal attention.
