According to recent research, poor or inexistant language acquisition is both a consequence and a cause of certain forms of autism, because it prevents socialisation. It can be improved by speech therapy.
The medical definition of autism has expanded in recent years to include a spectrum of brain disorders sharing similar symptoms but varying greatly in severity.
The incidence of autism spectrum disorders is also expanding. Diagnoses have shot up by a factor of 10 in the past decade, with some studies placing the incidence at 1 in 250.
Scientists searching for the biological underpinnings of autism are closing in on genetic mutations, defects in the structure of the brain and possible environmental triggers that contribute to the development of the disorder.
