Iowa, USA: Robert Shumaker has studied orangutans in Sumatra, at the Smithsonian Institution and now in southeast Des Moines, where he is helping to establish the United States' only research facility scheduled to have all four kinds of great apes: orangutans, bonobos, gorillas and chimpanzees.
Only one orangutan in the United States is going through full language research now. Azy, a 26-year-old orangutan born in captivity, is learning his numbers, and can identify grapes and other items by unrelated symbols or photos, using a computer touch screen. The computer's software records his answers and how long it takes him to decide
