Review: The Right Hand of the Sun by Anita Mason

London, UK (Telegraph): Though much remains unknown or disputed about Hernán Cortés's colonisation of the Americas, one of the remarkable aspects of Anita Mason's remarkable book is how much is based around the facts. Few are more astonishing than those regarding the translators Cortés acquired in Mexico. The first, Gerónimo de Aguilar, was a shipwrecked Spaniard who lived for eight years among the Mayan people as a slave, and learnt their language. The second, Dona Marina (or Malinche), was one of 20 women "given" to Cortés in tribute by the defeated Maya of Potonchan, who later went on to bear Cortés a child.
