A fuller picture of the crucial role played by Nisei linguists

California, USA (Nichi Bei): Recently, many Americans have become aware that Nisei/Kibei were used during World War II in the various Pacific campaigns to interrogate Japanese POWs, intercept, translate communication transmissions and capture documents. The more knowledgeable might even be aware of their valuable services during the occupation of Japan, acting in many ways as linguistic and cultural bridges. The author, however, casts a wide net to capture their varied roles in every major Pacific campaign from Alaska to Guadalcanal to Papau New Guinea to China-Burma to the occupation of Philippines, Korea, Japan (including their role in the War Crime Trials), as well as a minor role in the Manhattan Project.
