Communication between monkeys and mankind
|
| |
On The Web (IGN): Primates have been communicating via human language for over thirty years. Of course the vocal abilities of chimps and gorillas stop at simple grunts and shrieks, leaving American Sign Language as their only (currently) logical form of human communication. Koko, an African gorilla, is the best known of these "talking" primates, and has become the poster child for various wildlife foundations through the years. In 1977 director Barbet Schroder visited the then three-year-old gorilla in hopes of basing a fictional film around her, shooting research footage while there. After abandoning the project for technical reasons, he formed the idea for a documentary on Koko after reviewing his preliminary footage.
