Cardiff, Wales (ic Wales): Language expert David Crystal, professor of linguistics at Bangor University and author of more than 100 books on the subject, said most people think they have a vocabulary of between 5,000 to 20,000 words. In fact, a well-educated person is likely to know closer to 75,000 words. Professor Crystal carried out the research for his latest book Words Words Words, a study examining where words come from, how we use them and how they change over time.
