Numeral classifiers
|
| |
Massachusetts, USA (iBerkshires): The numeral classifier system categorizes referent objects into several classes such as humans, animals and objects with different shapes as well as functions. It's a classifying system partly drawn from human cognition and partly culture specific. In some classifier languages, these categories are combined with the second and third features and the system elaborates to more than a hundred classifiers to choose from. This book, by Kasumi Yamamoto, associate professor of Japanese at Williams College, explores how children learn a seemingly very complicated system at a young age.
"The Acquisition of Numeral Classifiers: The Case of Japanese Children" (2005).
