Canada: Census reveals ancestral language trends

Ottawa, Canada (Ottawa Citizen): The growth in Canada's aboriginal population hasn't necessarily translated into more people speaking an aboriginal language, the 2006 census reveals. Knowledge and regular use of an aboriginal language rest largely with the older generations and while some languages gained speakers over the last decade, others lost, according to data contained in the Statistics Canada report released yesterday on the country's aboriginal population.
