Canada: Language extinction and survival

Calgary, Canada (Herald): Thanks to grassroots efforts by people like Elmer Ghostkeeper, of the 60 different aboriginal languages spoken in Canada, some, like Cree, Blackfoot and Dene, have seen a rise in use amongst First Nations people. Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that while the country's aboriginal population has risen to more than a million, use of an aboriginal language in some cases hasn't kept up. Some languages, in fact - like Haida, Tlingit and Malecite - are in danger of out-and-out extinction. While such news will be alarming to many, it's happened before - many times throughout history, in fact.
