Montreal, Canada (Times Colonist): Jessie Hamilton dedicated the last decade of her life to trying to revive a vanishing language, and her legacy is a wealth of books, DVDs and phrase books providing the only written record of the Nuu-chah-nulth Barkley Sound dialect. Hamilton, 84, a member of the Hupacasath First Nation of Port Alberni, died Monday, leaving only three fluent speakers of the Hupacasath dialect and no one with her proficiency at writing down the language.
