UNESCO to enact a convention protecting cultural diversity worldwide

Edmonton, Canada (CBC): The United Nations cultural agency is poised to enact a convention on protecting cultural diversity worldwide. The goal of the proposed convention, formally titled the Convention on the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Contents and Artistic Expressions, is to protect a nation's cultural diversity and its culture from any negative effects of globalization. It also seeks to promote a country's ethnic traditions and minority languages.

Paris, France (International Herald Tribune): Of those countries voting, only the United States and Israel voted against the text. The 151 nations voting in favor of the text included the 25-members of the European Union as well as Brazil, which took the rare step of dispatching the cultural minister to vote in person. Australia and the Pacific island nation of Kiribati abstained.
