ASL fifth most studied foreign language

California, USA (San Diego Union Tribune): ASL has been accepted as a foreign language in many U.S. colleges. It is the fifth most studied foreign language, behind Spanish, French, German and Italian.
At the University of California and California State University systems, the number of ASL courses has jumped from 1,000 in 1998 to 10,000 this year, according to the state Department of Education.
