This article analyses the links between the two: “If you had arrived on campus in the 60’s with the idea of studying linguistics – the science of language – a revolutionary new paradigm would have been awaiting you there as well. You might have been pleasantly surprised to find that the old prescriptivism had been jettisoned in favor of the thoroughly modern descriptivism. What this meant to a linguist was that it was no longer fashionable to say that one naturally-produced speech form was right and another one wrong.”
