California, USA (Red Herring): Turning up the volume in mobile speech recognition, Massachusetts rivals Nuance Communications and VoiceSignal Technologies Tuesday clinched a $293 million merger. The acquisition of VoiceSignal is the latest in a string of voice deals in mobile, including Nuance’s $140 million acquisition of BeVocal in February, Microsoft’s $800 million buyout of Tellme in March and Google’s launch of a free voice-activated 411 service in April.
