Penguin results for 2005 bode well for translation market

New York, USA (Book Standard): Penguin Group reported operating profit of £60 million ($103.2 million) on sales of £804 million ($1.38 billion) for the year ended Dec. 31. That’s up from the £52 million ($89.5 million) in operating profit that the company reported in the prior year when sales were £786 million ($1.35 billion). The company entered India’s market for the first time last year, offering ten books in Hindi and Marathi. In 2006, Penguin expects to up that number to 70. Penguin also opened an office in Beijing and bought the English-language rights to Wolf Totem, one of China’s top five bestselling books.
