Brussels, Belgium (Europa press release): The European Union is keen to promote greater awareness of science and its contribution to the community through its own Science and Society programme. For example, it organises competitions, such as the Descartes Communication Prize, funds research on issues relating to science and governance, ethics, women in science, and youth and science, and hosts events, such as ‘Communicating European Research’ conference in November this year.
The European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) prize, worth €1 500, is given each year for an outstanding piece of science writing designed to report on a topical issue to a lay audience. The deadline for this year’s entries is 15 April, and the winner will be awarded on 18 June at the EMBO media workshop for young scientists in Heidelberg (DE).
